China Science Daily, November 29: On November 29, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the German National Academy of Sciences jointly issued a joint statement on the theme "The Road to Carbon Neutrality", proposing to control and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote energy transformation, and achieve the two countries Carbon neutrality goals, and work together to deal with the climate change crisis.
The two sides pointed out in the joint statement that achieving the goal of carbon neutrality depends on the rapid reduction of carbon emissions from fossil fuels. The global industrial powers can play an important role in mitigating the harmful effects of climate change by controlling and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Both China and Germany are promoting the application of renewable energy in various fields, protecting and restoring the ecological environment, and will achieve carbon neutrality as the main goal in the next few decades, but they also face similar scientific challenges in many aspects.
The two sides believe that in order to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality, efforts should be made in four aspects: first, transition to carbon neutral energy system; second, innovation and transformation of renewable energy and carbon neutral technology; third, protection and restoration of ecosystem and enhancement of carbon sink function; fourth, extensive international cooperation in the field of energy and climate.
According to the joint statement, the two sides will jointly hold the second "Science and Future" seminar of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the German National Academy of Sciences in Berlin, Germany in the autumn of 2024, based on the latest research results in the above-mentioned related fields, to explore the challenges and countermeasures in the process of achieving the goal of carbon neutrality.
