From May 9 to 11, 2024, the “8th National Symposium on Medical Membranes and Their Applications” was successfully held in Hangzhou. The event was hosted by the China Membrane Industry Association and Hangzhou Kebaiter Filtration Equipment Co., Ltd., organized by the Editorial Board of “Membrane Science and Technology” and the Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Membrane Technology Professional Committee of the China Membrane Industry Association, and co-organized by the Key Laboratory of Biopharmaceutical Preparation and Delivery (Chinese Academy of Sciences), the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for Membrane and Water Treatment Technologies (Zhejiang University), and the Zhejiang Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center for Membrane Separation and Water Treatment (Zhejiang University of Technology).
Nearly 300 renowned experts, scholars, leaders, and engineering professionals from over 130 institutions—including universities, research institutes, hospitals, and enterprises—spanning the national membrane and pharmaceutical sectors, gathered in Hangzhou to exchange insights on the latest technological advances and emerging trends in membrane technology within the pharmaceutical industry, thereby supporting the high-quality development of China’s pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors.
Academician Gao Congjie, a leading authority in the field of membranes, Zheng Genjiang, Chairman of the China Membrane Industry Association, and Zhang Zhurong, General Manager of Hangzhou Kebaiter Filtration Equipment Co., Ltd., each delivered remarks. In his address, Academician Gao highlighted the pivotal role of membrane technology in advancing and developing the pharmaceutical sector, commended the achievements made in recent years, and encouraged all attendees to unite and collaborate to make even greater contributions to the nation’s health‑care industry.
The conference program features a total of 36 sessions covering fundamental technologies and applications of medical membranes, as well as artificial organs, biomedical devices, vaccines, traditional Chinese medicine, and biopharmaceutical separations. The content encompasses medical membrane materials such as PP, PVDF, PES, graphene, PTFE, molecular sieves, and ceramic membranes; membrane processes including microfiltration, ultrafiltration, gas‑separation membranes, nanofiltration, electrodialysis, and membrane catalysis; and application areas ranging from traditional Chinese medicine extraction and bioethanol production to drug purification, antibiotic concentration, hemodialysis, and artificial lungs.
This medical‑membrane conference has seamlessly integrated the entire upstream–downstream value chain of the membrane industry, featuring rich content, innovative concepts, and strong complementarity. It fully showcases China’s cutting‑edge technological achievements in pharmaceutical applications and underscores the high level of scientific and technical expertise of Chinese membrane scientists and engineers.
